Pathology (Morbid Anatomy &Histopathology) 400 Level
Course Objective
The course comprises of three parts:
Introductory Pathology: entails general principles of diseases. This provides framework for a better understanding of mechanisms of diseases.
Systematic Pathology, which is divided into two blocks: Block I and II. Review of common diseases in all the systems of body with special emphasis on tropical diseases, HIV/AIDS and forensic medicine.
Instructional Methods:
These are through delivery of lectures, tutorials, and seminars using multimedia projector. Practical sessions are conducted via demonstrations with museum pots of gross specimens and viewing of slides with the aid of light microscope.
Introductory Pathology
Introduction to Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology.
Cell reaction to injury, cellular adaptation to injury, cell death,
Acute inflammation and morphological forms of acute inflammatory process.
Chronic inflammation and granuloma formation. Healing, repair and regeneration of tissues.
Physical and chemical agents in the causation of diseases.
Genetic basis of diseases.
Neoplasia and carcinogenesis. Clinical aspects of neoplasia.
Degenerative and metabolic disorders.
Systematic Pathology:
Block I
Cardiovascular System; Congenital heart disease, Rheumatic heart diseases.
Cardiomyopathy, Ischaemic heart disease,
Hypertensive heart disease, Infective cardiac Disorders,
Cardiac pathology in the tropics.
Renal System:
Glomerulonephritis, Interstitial nephritis,
Systemic disorders of the kidney.
Renal tumours
Respiratory System:
Upper respiratory tract.
Vascular and haemodynamic disorders of the lungs.
Pulmonary infections,
Chronic obliterative and obstructive pulmonary disorders,
Pulmonary tuberculosis,
Lung tumours.
Gastrointestinal System:
Congenital gastrointestinal abnormalities,
Mechanical and muscular disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT)
Gastritis, Malabsorption. Colitis, Gastric carcinoma, Colonic carcinoma.
Liver pathology: Acute viral hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, Hepatocellular carcinoma.
Childhood Tumours:
Burkitts Lymphoma, Wilms tumours,
Retinoblastoma, Medulloblastoma, Neuroblastoma.

Endocrine Pathology:
Pituitary, Thyroid, Adrenals,
Parathyroid, Diabetes mellitus.
Neuropathology:
Congenital abnormalities, Perinatal neuropathology,
Central nervous system (CNS) infections,
Traumatic disorders of the CNS, Non-Traumatic Vascular disorders,
Primary neurodegenerative diseases.
CNS tumours
Lymphoreticular Pathology:
Acute forms of lymphadenitis
Chronic forms of lymphadenitis
HIV/ AIDS
Lymphomas
Genital Tract Pathology:
Non-neoplastic lesions of the female genitalia
Uterine tumours, leiomyomas, cervical cancer.
Breast cancer.
Prostate tumours, Benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatic carcinoma.
Tropical pathology:
Typhoid fever, Schistosomiasis,
Malaria, Amoebiasis, Tuberculosis.
Gross pathology.
Postmortem demonstration and dissection.
Histopathology of:
Acute inflammatory process.
Chronic inflammatory process
Benign and Malignant lesions.
Adenocarcinomas and soft tissue sarcomas.
