History

The Department of Pathology at the University of Ilorin came into existence in 1978. At inception, the two (2) disciplines of Pathology (Morbid Anatomy) and Haematology operated as a composite department.  Professor Irwin Samuel was the foundation Head of Department from 1978-1979.  He handed over to the then-Dr. (now Prof.) Albert S. Anjorin (1979-1982) while the then Dr. (now Prof.) Banji Adewuyi was Head of Department from 1982 to 1985.  Eventually, the two specialties were separated into individual departments and Prof Anjorin headed the Department of Pathology till 2001.

The department operates in tandem with the sister department at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital where we usually obtain some of the teaching materials such as histopathology slides and surgical specimens for practical sessions.  The department also works collaboratively with the other three (3) departments that constitute the Pathological Sciences of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences of College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin.
